Breakouts & Blemishes
Congestion, bumps and the stubborn marks they leave behind.
On melanin-rich skin the breakout is often the short part of the story — the mark it leaves can outlast it by months. That makes calming breakouts early more valuable than treating them aggressively once they arrive.
Most over-the-counter routines fail for the same reason: they attack the skin with strong, drying products, the barrier breaks down, and the skin responds with more congestion and more pigment.
Gentle, consistent and non-stripping wins.
Why it happens
Excess oil and blocked pores
Oil combines with dead cells and blocks the pore. Bacteria then multiply in the blockage.
Hormonal cycles
Jawline and chin breakouts that track your cycle are hormonal and often need medical input rather than another cream.
Heavy or occlusive products
Rich creams, hair oils along the hairline and some make-up can trigger congestion.
Friction and touching
Phones, helmets, masks and resting your face on your hand all contribute.
The routine that helps
Cleanse twice daily
Gently. Over-washing worsens oil production.
Salicylic acid 2–3 nights a week
Helps keep pores clear without stripping the whole face.
Niacinamide daily
Reduces the look of congestion and helps with the marks left behind at the same time.
Light, oil-free moisturiser
Skipping moisturiser to "dry out" spots makes things worse.
Sunscreen
Protects healing marks from darkening further. Choose a light, non-greasy formula.
Do
- Change pillowcases regularly and clean your phone screen
- Treat marks early with niacinamide and sunscreen
- Keep moisturising, even when oily
Avoid
- Do not pick or squeeze — that is what creates lasting marks
- Do not use alcohol-heavy toners or harsh scrubs
- Do not apply several spot treatments at once
How long it takes
Congestion typically improves over 6–8 weeks. The marks left behind fade over 3–6 months with sunscreen.
When to see a professional
See a dermatologist for painful, deep, cystic or scarring acne, or anything that has not responded after three months. Prescription treatment is far more effective than cosmetics for moderate-to-severe acne.
Common questions
Why do my pimples leave dark marks?
Inflammation triggers extra pigment production, and melanin-rich skin does this readily. The best prevention is calming breakouts early, never picking, and wearing daily sunscreen while marks fade.
Should I stop moisturising if my skin is oily?
No. Skipping moisturiser dehydrates skin, which often makes it produce more oil. A light, oil-free water gel is the right choice.
